(The Past)
“Why don’t you have a beer and just relax,” Jack said as he watched Tommy pace around the room.
“I didn’t do a background check on him. Should I have done a background check? What if he’s wanted in ten states?”
Jack smiled.
“She went on a date. It happens. We took lots of girls out when we were 16.”
Tommy glared at him.
“That’s supposed to make me feel better? We were pigs, Jack! She isn’t ready for that. I mean, we never had the sex talk. We should have had the sex talk with her. Does she even have protection? I think I’m going to be sick,” he sat down and put his head in his hands.
Jack leaned back and wiped his face.
“Do you think Julie is easy?”
Tommy looked at him with disgust.
“Of course not.”
“So what makes you think she is going to sleep with a guy on the first date?”
“Because she wants to be grown up. She always yells at me to stop treating her like a child. She will do this to spite me.”
Jack began to get a little worried.
“You don’t think she would do something as important as sex just to anger you,” he said uneasily.
“Was it important to you? Did you even think twice about it the first time you had sex?”
Jack laughed.
“Well yes, I mean because I was so excited, but no, not in the sense of it being right or wrong.”
Tommy looked at his watch.
“It’s 9 pm. She should be home.”
“She has an 11 pm curfew,” Jack said. “It’s Friday and we told her we trusted her.”
They both jumped when Jack’s phone rang.
“Hello? Are you okay? Of course, where are you? No, don’t hitchhike or we’ll kill you. We’re on our way,” he sat down and looked at Tommy.
“Something is wrong and she needs us to pick her up.”
Tommy nodded and they raced to the car.
“Julie?” Tommy ran out of the car as soon as Jack pulled up the park where she said she would be.
“I’m here,” she said as she walked to him.
“Oh thank God. Are you okay?” he hugged her.
She pushed him off her and looked at him like he was crazy.
“I’m fine. Can we go home?” she said on the verge of tears.
They got in the car and Jack drove them home in silence. They walked in and Julie went to change before she joined them in the family room.
“Can I ask you both something?”
Tommy and Jack looked at her.
“Of course.”
“If we weren’t related, would you be repulsed by me in a romantic way?”
Both men looked at her and felt terrible at her sadness.
“At the risk of sounding really inappropriate, you are a beautiful and any man would be lucky to be with you,” Jack said.
Tommy smiled and handed her a donut.
“Can you tell us what happened?”
“I’m not ready to have sex yet.”
“Oh thank God!” Tommy said and Julie glared at him.
“Nice,” she rolled her eyes.
“Well you’re too young,” he said.
“How old were you both when you first had sex?”
Jack looked at Tommy and both of them were quiet.
“It’s different for boys,” Jack said.
“That’s shit,” Julie said and sighed. “Forget I asked.”
“Did Henry pressure you to have sex?” Jack asked.
“He said I owed it to him,” she said quietly.
“I’m going to kill him,” Jack stood up and went to grab his keys.
“Stop!” Julie said.
Jack sat down and looked at Tommy who was just as angry.
“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t go kill him.”
“Because I punched him and kicked him in the balls.”
Tommy stifled a laugh and Jack grinned.
“Well it’s not like I can’t handle myself,” Julie said. “But that’s the issue. He acted like he was doing me a favor. He said I would never find anyone to go out with me if I didn’t put out.”
She stood up and paced.
“I just don’t understand why I can’t ever find anyone who is sincere and wants me for me, you know?” she walked back down and plopped on the couch, taking the bag of donuts and taking a big bite.
“I mean, what’s wrong with me?” she asked as her face was covered with powdered sugar.
Tommy and Jack grinned.
“Nothing. You’re perfect and I think perfect girls like you simply have to wait for that once in a lifetime love,” Tommy said. “Those don’t happen in high school.”
“That’s not true. Mom and dad met in high school,” she said and licked the jelly off her fingers.
“That was an anomaly,” he said. “Besides, you’re too amazing for high school boys.”
“So I should date college men?” she asked, a twinkle in her eyes.
Jack and Tommy paled.
“No. Never.”
“Relax. I think I’m having a much better time just making both of you crazy.”
Jack laughed and looked at them both.
“So, do you have any questions? I mean we’ve never had ‘the talk’.”
Julie grinned.
“And we’re not having it now.”
“But you know you can ask us anything,” Tommy said.
She nodded.
“Well I do have one question,” she said seriously.
The men waited.
“My friends all told me that 9 inches is standard. Is that true?”
Tommy and Jack just stared at her until she burst out laughing.
“You both are just too easy,” she said and finished her donut.
