Memorial Day

I think a lot of our service men and women, not just on Memorial day, but all year long. I created the characters of Bill and Mike out of a need to not only pay homage to the amazing sacrifices so many have made, but to put a human spin, a “real” face, on the idea of what it means to be self sacrificing.

I try very hard not to make Bill or Mike super human. I love their flaws and their insecurities because it’s truly what makes them heroes. Their willingness to do what has to be done, despite leaving their loved ones behind is, to me, the true definition of heroic. The fight they all go through, internally, the struggles and the fears are at times debilitating, but it’s also what helps all of us to sleep at night. Their sacrifice is what makes this Nation great.

I also made it a point to write Julie as the supportive wife because I think the sacrifice of those men and women left home is also heroic. Having your spouse gone for months to years at a time and knowing the danger they are in is a threat I can’t imagine. I know of many families in that specific situation and they inspire me every day.

Much of what I envisioned for Bill has changed from the inception of the series and that is due to the incredible support he received. I realized how important a character like Bill was to the family and to the series and it has been an honor to write his story. Mike’s addition and blossoming from being Bill’s friend to having his own story has also been such fun to write. The best compliment I can receive is people who ask for more. That’s what happened with both Mike and Bill.

On this Memorial weekend, I hope everyone remembers how much some have given to ensure the safety of so many others. Whatever you do to relax and have fun, when you see a soldier or the family of a serviceperson, smile at them and tell them you’re thankful. Whatever your feelings on any of the conflicts we are in, the job of the Soldier is the same. Serve and protect this great nation, at any cost.

I thank you for your service.
