Beautiful Disaster

I am working on a new novel, which is the backstory of Evan and Elizabeth from the series. They have a beautiful love story which took place years before the series, and I have been developing their book for a while. It is called “Beautiful Disaster” and the release date will be later in 2014. I wanted to share an excerpt and get your feedback.

Enjoy!

Elizabeth sat next to Evan after they brought him back in and she took his hand in hers. It felt like home to touch him and she put his palm against her cheek and kissed his fingers.

“Baby you need to wake up,” she reached and gently smoothed his hair by the bandage he had on his head. “There is so much I need to tell you.”

He didn’t move so she went to put her free hand on his chest by his side, but then stopped.

“I don’t want to hurt you. They had to fix your lung and your collarbone was snapped. Maybe I shouldn’t touch you at all,” she placed his hand back down and wiped her eyes. “I just miss you so much and I was so afraid I had lost you for good.”

“Elizabeth,” a voice sent chills down her spine and she turned and looked at Evan’s father standing there.

“I am just sitting with him. He hasn’t regained consciousness yet,” she said coolly.

“We had an agreement,” he said firmly.

Her tears fell as she remembered their agreement. She had never told anyone of their agreement. It was the agreement that stole her life.

“It’s been two years. Perhaps it’s time to move on,” she said, cursing her tears.

“Elizabeth, you aren’t right for him. He is doing well here. He was hurt today because of you. He was out there because of you.”

She laughed. “So now I’m in charge of earthquakes? Good to know I wield so much power.”

“He wouldn’t have been in danger if you weren’t here. You need to leave and respect his needs.”

“Why are you so cruel?” she stood up and looked at him.

“You need to leave Elizabeth,” he said. “I don’t want to have to remind you why.”

She looked at Evan and leaned in to kiss his forehead. “I love you,” she whispered and stormed out.

Evan’s dad looked at his son who moved at Elizabeth’s kiss. He opened his eyes and tried to focus.

“Elizabeth?” he said thickly.

“No son, she isn’t here. It’s just me.”

Evan looked at his father and closed his eyes, heartbroken.

(Later)

Elizabeth sat in Evan’s room again after he came out of surgery. He was still unconscious and Elizabeth found out his dad was involved in a complex surgery so he would be busy for a while. She touched his hand and he began to stir. She prayed he wouldn’t throw her out.

“Evan?” she stroked his cheek.

He blinked a few times and opened his eyes. There were tears almost immediately and she shook her head, stopping him from trying to talk.

“I’ll leave in a minute, so please don’t get upset. Just listen. I wrote something for you to read when you feel up to it. I am not allowed to be here and I don’t want to upset you at all, but I need you to know that not everything you think happened is what happened. I want to explain, but I need you to listen and you won’t do that.”

She put a folded up note on the table next to his bed. “Please read this when you can, but it’s important your dad doesn’t see it,” she wiped her eyes as her tears spilled over.

He needed to say something, but he couldn’t get his body to work. Why was she crying? What had he missed?

Elizabeth looked behind her and then she faced him, her fear evident. “Please, even if you don’t want to read it, then throw it out or burn it, but please don’t show it to him,” she leaned in and kissed his cheek. “I’m begging you to please give me another chance. There has never been anyone but you.”

He listened to her and his tears came as she spoke. He looked up as the nurse came and Elizabeth froze.

“He is not to have any visitors, especially you,” she said and Elizabeth stood up.

“I know. I’m leaving,” she looked at Evan who was stunned by the nurse’s words, but his voice wasn’t working right. He tried to say something, but he was still sedated.

The nurse walked in and Elizabeth grabbed her purse. “Dr. Thrushcross will be very upset you were here.”

Elizabeth nodded and ran out.

Evan tried to say something. He saw the nurse go to clean up the table and she was about to take the note Elizabeth left. Evan kicked at the IV pole and it distracted her enough that he was able to concentrate enough to grab the note, despite his wobbly state. He held it in his hand and covered his hand with the blanket. He closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep when the nurse looked at him. He heard her leave and he opened his eyes. What had Elizabeth meant about his father? What the hell was going on?

Evan woke up and looked around, realizing he must have fallen asleep again. He reached up to wipe his face and his shoulder screamed in pain. He tried to remember what had happened, but the last chunk of time was fuzzy. What day was it? Why was he so out of it? He looked around and felt something poking in his side. He carefully reached and pulled out a folded piece of paper, which he was lying on. Elizabeth’s face flashed in front of him. She had been there. She had given him a note. He heard voices coming, so he hid the note and pretended to be asleep.

“He should have regained consciousness. I don’t understand why he remains asleep,” a voice said. Evan recognized it as his father.

“I don’t know, Doctor. He continues to improve and his numbers are stable,” a woman said, Evan assumed it was a nurse.

“Have there been any more incidents since the last one?”

“No sir. I’m very sorry we allowed that woman near him. I have removed that nurse from his care. Everyone on the floor has strict instructions not to allow her to visit.”

Evan didn’t make a move and he heard the nurse leave. His father was still there.

“You need to wake up son. You have too much to do and with Elizabeth hanging around again, everything we worked for might be threatened. I don’t want to have to do anything to her, but if she pushes me, I will act in your best interest, like I always have,” he sighed and walked out.

Evan opened his eyes and made sure he was alone. He moved the back of the bed up a little and he looked at the note in his hand. What had he missed? He felt sick and it had nothing to do with any injury. What did his dad mean? What had he done? He opened the note in his hand and saw Elizabeth’s writing. Almost immediately, his mind flashed to a moment from the past.

*******

Evan and Elizabeth walked along the beach on the last day of their spring break. It was almost time for their college graduation and they knew their future would be somewhere together. Jason’s career was taking off and their plans were in motion for a new start in LA. They had taken a trip to a secluded beach in the upper peninsula of Michigan and they had spent the last few days just talking about their hopes and dreams. Evan wore a pair of swim trunks and Elizabeth wore a small blue bikini, and at 22 years old, they were the picture of the perfect couple. His arm was around her shoulder and she had her arm around his waist as they walked in the sand. Her long reddish brown hair was blowing in the wind and his sandy brown hair was still drying from the dip he took in the lake.

They had been together forever, or as long as they both knew what it meant to be in love. Evan was everything she ever wanted in a partner, sweet and sensitive and tender when they were alone, a side most people never saw. To the world, he was brave and strong and intelligent; everything a prospective police officer should be, but he was also funny and sexy and an amazing friend. She felt such an attraction to him and the more they were together, the deeper the connection became. She knew he felt the same way and it had taken him so long to admit it. He was so afraid of being hurt and he doubted his ability to be enough for her. Once they declared their love for one another, it had been magical.

“What’s on your mind?” he stopped and faced her. “You’ve been quiet for a long time.”

She was glad for the sunglasses so he didn’t see her tears forming. “Nothing, I’m just happy.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but you are never quiet, Elizabeth, what’s happening?” he stroked her cheek.

She ran her hands over his bare chest and then around his back and hugged him, pressing her face against his torso.

“Hey, what is it?” he held her and murmured into her ear as he leaned down.

“Do you ever wonder what the future holds?” she asked as she nuzzled his chest.

“Sure,” he said simply.

She smiled at his answer and stepped back. “Care to share?”

He grinned and scooped her up in his arms, causing her to squeal. “I think as long as I’m holding you, I don’t care what else happens.”

He carried her to the water and put her down, their feet in the lake and the sun beginning to set. She pulled her sunglasses off and looked into his eyes.

“Let’s go back to our towels,” she started to say something else, but stopped.

He followed her back and they sat on their towels in the private cabana. She shivered a little and he pulled her onto his lap.

“What do you see?”

She held his arms around her middle and leaned against him. “Where?”

“When you look at the future,” he nibbled on her neck.

She was quiet for a minute and then she shrugged. “I see you. Always and forever, I see you.”

He felt her words down to his toes and she turned and snaked her arms up around his neck, pulling him to her. He pressed his mouth to her and she kissed him with intense passion, pulling him to her as she lay on the towel.

“Elizabeth, wait,” he said, his heart racing.

“Don’t you want to make love to me?” she asked in a low voice, her eyes almost black.

“We’ve never made love before. I don’t want you to do anything you aren’t ready for,” he said softly as he sat back. Neither one of them had ever had sex with anyone, and he wanted her to be sure. She had wanted to wait and he respected that.

She sat up and stroked his cheek. “I love you. I know you love me. We have been waiting for this moment for so long, Ev. I want to feel you love me,” she untied her bikini top and dropped the material on the floor next to them.

“I want you to touch me. I want this, tonight, to be our first time,” she took his hand in hers and placed it on her breast.

“You are so beautiful,” he said, his eyes shining with love. “I don’t know what you see in me.”

“I thought we’d already established that,” she grinned. “I see our future.”

He gently laid her on the towel in their secluded cabana and he ran his hands over her, using his mouth to follow the trail his hands went. He kissed her collarbone and made his way down her ample cleavage to her nipples, which stood erect at his touch. He took one in his mouth and when she moaned, he was afraid he wasn’t going to last long enough to actually have anything happen.

He moved down her firm abdomen and she lifted her hips as he pulled her bikini bottoms off. He sat back and stared at her and she blushed.

“Is something wrong?” she moved to cover up, suddenly feeling very self-conscious.

“No,” he took her hands and moved them. “You just take my breath away.”

She adored him and she suddenly needed more. She needed him, all of him, to claim him as her own, forever.

“Let me see you,” she said softly as she sat up and gently pushed him onto his back. She ran her hands over his chest and leaned in to kiss his torso as her hair fell over his skin, driving him crazy. She ran her hand down his body and over the bulge still covered in his trunks.

“Oh God, Elizabeth,” he moaned as she slipped her fingers under the band and wrapped her hand around his hard shaft. She smiled at him as she pulled his trunks off and she ran her hands up his legs, relishing the beauty of his body.

“Do you have protection?” she asked him.

“Oh shit,” he swore. “My pants are in the car.”

She grinned. “I’ve got us covered,” she reached into her bag and pulled out a strip of condoms.

He laughed and she shrugged.

“I’ve been waiting,” she handed him a packet and he covered himself before moving so she was on her back again. She suddenly worried if she would know what to do.

“Are you sure?” he saw her face change.

“I’m sure. I just don’t want to disappoint you,” she said as he moved between her legs.

“I don’t think that’s possible,” he stroked her cheek and touched her lips. “We’ll go slow and you tell me if you want me to stop.”

She nodded and he gently entered her, slowly, both of them overwhelmed by the unfamiliar sensations. He put his hands next to her face as he moved into her and she closed her eyes, her tears coming.

“Hey, are you okay?” he kissed her tears.

She felt a burning sensation and then she began to feel a need for more. “I’m okay. Please don’t stop,” she moved her hands over his back and opened her legs wider for him to push farther. He moved into her and stopped when their hips met.

“Oh God, Ev,” she said as he began to slowly move in and out. She felt the painful sensations stop and an intense pleasure took over.

“I love you so much,” he said as he moved a few more times and she held him to her as he pressed his body to hers. She felt a fluttering in her stomach and the most amazing rush of feeling that came over her. She cried out as her body splintered under him and he buried his head in her shoulder as he exploded inside of her. He lay with her, in her and she moved the hair off his sweaty forehead before he kissed her sensually and moved a few more times.

She felt an immediate emptiness when he moved off of her and she lay there, feeling different, yet oddly she felt the same.

He lay back down next to her and pulled her to him, wanting her close, needing to keep the connection. He wrapped his body around her and she just felt like no matter what, wherever they went, he was home.

(Present day)

Evan shook his head as he remembered every moment of that night. They had made love twice during the night back at the hotel and they simply couldn’t get enough of each other. He had purchased a ring before their move, and a week before they were to leave he went to propose. He walked into that room and his life ended. He died that day, and he never looked back.

Looking at the letter she left him, he began to wonder if he had made the wrong choice. What did his father mean and why would he not want Elizabeth there? Was he simply worried about Evan being upset?

But then there was her total fear. He saw it in her eyes, and if he knew anything about Elizabeth, it was that she wasn’t afraid of anything. It always worried him, her disregard for her own safety; because he knew one day she may come across the wrong person. He got a sick feeling that maybe she had. Maybe it was his father. He looked at her letter and began to read.
